Caribbean food in London

I want to go to Jamaica. There’s something about Jamaican people that draws me to the place. The culture seems so laid back and the people love a good laugh; meeting Jamaicans often makes me wonder if more cultures adopted their outlook on life the world would be a happier place.

I walk into Negril in Brixton Hill, London, after a hard day at work and I feel instantly more relaxed. Reggae music is playing softly and the walls are decorated with bright Caribbean artwork. We’re greeted with a friendly hello from the waiter and notice most of the seats in the small restaurant are already reserved – this eatery is a popular location to dine.

Even the hot chocolate at Negril has a Jamaican stamp with its ‘J’

While deciding on our Caribbean food, I order a detox drink made from lemon, carrots and apple, while Dave chooses the fruity ‘Caribbean Queen’. On arrival, our waiter says with a wink that surely Dave’s the King in this partnership and he must’ve made a mistake with his drink order. Personally I gotta love that Jamaican sense of humour!

We pondered over the Caribbean food menu for awhile – there’s a range of curries, jerk chicken, ribs and fish dishes to choose from. Eventually we settled on the salted fish and BBQ ribs for entree…

Followed by the chicken burger and jerk chicken roti wrap for our mains.

The food is served up without fuss but – like the Jamaicans – full of flavour. I can’t wait until the day I’m lying in the sun on a hammock stretched over a white sandy beach but until then at least I have Negril as my little taste of the Caribbean.
