We haven’t been to Crete but it looks stunning and when we get back to Europe we’d love to visit. This guest post tells you all about the best resorts for families on the island.
Crete, the largest island in Greece, offers 650km of coastline, rugged mountain ranges and a history so diverse that it’s known the world over. With pretty villages nestled within the mountainous areas inland and the larger more modern coastal towns like Malia, Crete combines the charm of a smaller island with the diversity of one much larger.
Cheap flights to Crete ensure families on even limited budgets can enjoy a holiday on this Mediterranean jewel. Crete of course has plenty of resorts to choose from, and these are our top recommendations for family friendly resorts.
Crete for families
With plenty of family friendly hotels, two water parks, stunning beaches and Crete’s first aquarium, Hersonissos is an excellent choice for families. It’s just 25km from Heraklion airport, ensuring a swift transfer time between airport and resort, to get your holiday started ASAP! A former fishing village, this lively town now boasts the only 18 hole golf course on Crete, boat trips, horse riding and plenty of watersports to enjoy.
With just over an hour transfer time from the airport, Elounda is perfect for laidback beach holidays and immersing yourself in the Creten lifestyle. The beaches surrounding Elounda are famous for their stunning scenery, backed by a spectacular mountain range and boasting a blue flag for crystal clear waters and clean sand. The beaches here are perfect for snorkelling and paddling children. The harbour is the hub of Elounda, so why not relax here in one of the many bars and restaurants and enjoy a spot of people watching while the children marvel at the colourful fishing boats.
One of the largest towns in Crete, Rethymnon is situated 90 minutes from the airport, so is perhaps more suited to families with older children. The beaches in the area vary wildly, from quieter beaches in the shade of palm trees to action packed beaches backing on to lively bars. The town itself offers an enchanting mix of modern and old buildings. The area was occupied by the Venetians for quite some time and the town is backed by the remains of the huge 16th Century castle left by the Venetians after their occupation of the island.
It’s a fantastic spot for hiking and the night-life can be as lively or as quiet as you like.
Crete – the perfect place to holiday
Crete really does have it all when it comes to the variety of resorts on offer to families – whether it’s a quiet holiday in a traditional fishing village or a lively action packed stay in one of the larger resort, you’re sure to find everything you want and more on this beautiful island.
